The First Murder Trial In Otsego County, 1805

Looking for the names of teachers at the Filer Corners school I came upon this note from F. T. Jarvis. His recollections contain some errors. The crime took place in the Town of Burlington, not Butternuts. I was able to find an account of the trial at Cornell University [ https://digital.library.cornell.edu/catalog/sat0203] and attached it below.

Reminisences of Olden Times -- appeared in the Feb 10, 1892 of The Morris Chronicle.

The very sad short account of the tale is that a school teacher with seven years experience, Stephen Arnold beat a six year old student, Betsey Van Armburgh, to death for being unable to pronounce the word "gig" properly.

I was unable to find an actual grave for Betsey, but this woman created a virtual one on findagrave.
